1.1What is motivational dialogue?

Motivational dialogue is an approach to encouraging behaviour change.

It is a subtle balance of directive and learner-centred conversation shaped by an underpinning philosophy, or ethos, and an understanding of what triggers change.

Your role in motivational dialogue is to enable learners to explore for themselves the benefits of, and their feelings about, behaviour change.

In this module we look at the ethos of motivational dialogue and at some of the skills that can help you guide and challenge your learners.
